Tangier
Tangier is a city on the north coast of Morocco that is often the gateway to Africa for those traveling overland from Europe.
Due to its proximity to the Old Continent, Portugal tried to conquer it several times. It would only succeed in 1471 when, after the capture of Arzila (today Asilah), the inhabitants abandoned Tangier before they were attacked.
Tangier was only out of Portuguese hands in 1661, when (along with Bombay, India) it was part of Catarina de Bragança's dowry when she married King Charles II of England.
